Switching organizations
If you belong to more than one GreekManage organization — for example you’re an active member at one chapter and a regional admin at another, or a platform admin spanning every tenant — the Org Switcher dropdown lets you flip between them without signing out.
What you see
A small building icon + organization name + chevron sits in the top-right of the app shell, between the role/notification controls and the theme toggle. The name is always the organization the page is showing you. Clicking it opens a dropdown with one row per organization you can access. The currently-active org has a check mark next to it.
Platform staff who don’t hold a role in an organization see Platform staff on the button instead of an organization name.
What’s in the dropdown
Each row shows:
- Organization name — alphabetically sorted across all orgs you can access.
- Your role in that org — one of Platform admin, National admin, Regional admin, or Chapter member. If you wear multiple hats in one org (e.g. you’re both a chapter member and a national admin), the stronger role wins for the row.
Switching: what happens
- Click the dropdown trigger.
- Click any other organization in the list.
- The app:
- Persists your selection in
localStorageundergm.selectedOrgIdso the choice survives refreshes within the same browser. - Refetches
/api/auth/me/?org_id=<your-pick>so the rest of the app sees the scoped role context (your role, your modules, your chapter / region) for that org only. - Opens that org’s dashboard (
/org/dashboard,/region/dashboardor/chapter/dashboard, depending on your role there) and shows a “Now viewing {org}” message. For platform admins, the row opens that organization’s page in the platform console.
- Persists your selection in
The current page does not stay on screen during a switch — the navigation moves you to a sensible landing page in the new org. If you had unsaved form input, that’s lost. Save first, switch second.
Persistence
Your selected org is per-browser, not per-account. Sign in on another device and you’ll start on whichever org the /api/auth/me/ default returns (typically the org with your strongest role). The first time you click the switcher there, the selection sticks.
A future affordance will thread the persisted org-id into the initial /me call on app boot, so the page that loads right after a refresh respects your last-selected org without an extra hop. Today the switcher honors the persisted choice only after you click into it once mid-session.
What admins and platform admins see differently
- National admins in a single org — switcher hidden, no behavior change.
- National admins in multiple orgs — every org they admin is in the dropdown, role badge per row.
- Regional admins — every region they cover is in the dropdown.
- Platform admins — every org in the platform is in the dropdown (sorted alphabetically). Selecting an org opens it in the
/platformconsole. On an organization page (/org/...) without an organization role, a banner says no organization is selected, so empty org-wide pages are not mistaken for the tenant’s data.
Links meant for another role
Organization pages (/org/...) are for national admins and region pages (/region/...) are for regional admins. If you follow a link meant for another role, for example an HQ email that links to /org/members, GreekManage opens the same page in your own workspace (/chapter/members) and tells you it did. If your workspace has no such page, you land on your dashboard.
Errors and edge cases
- You only see one org in the dropdown. Then the switcher is showing, but you actually only have one accessible context. Most likely you have admin/membership rows in multiple orgs but only one is currently active. Inactive
Membership/OrganizationAdminrows are filtered out. - The sidebar looks different after switching. A module the previous org had enabled may be licensed off in the new one, so some entries you’re used to may not be present.
- Your previous tab still shows the old org. The switcher only updates the current tab. Open tabs against the previous org continue working until they fetch fresh data, at which point they’ll respect the new selection.
